The Maple Leafs need to take action now.

Since their season ended suddenly in early May, all the focus has been on Mitch Marner’s future. Occasionally, there’s talk of adding a couple of defensemen this summer. However, internally, their attention should be elsewhere because there’s a more pressing gap to fill. The ideal candidate for this role was just signed by the coach they recently let go.

The New Jersey Devils acquiring Jacob Markström should have set off alarms in Toronto. Apparently, the Leafs were heavily involved in trying to acquire Markström, who had a full no-trade clause but would have waived it to join them.
