Breaking News: There is a reason why Dak Prescott can lead the cowboys to the championship but he is gone…

Dak Prescott, who was playing probably the finest football of his career, was the odds-on favorite to win the 2023 NFL MVP award entering Week 15 of the season. The Dallas Cowboys then struggled again in the postseason, making Prescott’s looming contract expiration date an even greater topic this offseason.

During an interview with Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports Radio on Monday, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones attempted to quiet any speculation about Prescott’s lack of confidence and the quarterback’s future with the team.

“I mean, I believe Dak can lead us to a championship,” Jones added. “He does things the proper way. He is undoubtedly the football team’s leader. He keeps everyone motivated during the offseason. He’s got everyone working out and doing everything it takes to put in the effort to give themselves every chance of winning the championship. It just so happens that the classic oblong football doesn’t always bounce your way.

“We’ve had some bad breaks and games in the postseason. However, we have won 12 games in a row for the past three years. I believe that ranks at the top of what teams have accomplished during a three-year span. And, you know, we’re hanging out by the rim. We just have to go up there and grab it, to use a basketball term, and dunk it. We’re hanging around the rim. We just need to get the job done.”

Jones stated that it is a “priority” to reach an agreement with Prescott. Franchise quarterback contracts, “they just take time,” Jones explained. Prescott stated in mid-April that no progress had been made toward a new agreement. The quarterback stated that he spoke with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones regarding his contract, but that “real” negotiations had not taken place.
