After taking home the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters title, Stefanos Tsitsipas gave an explanation for why he will not be competing in mixed doubles with Maria Sakkari in the 2024 Olympics.

Sakkari stated a few days ago that Tsitsipas is not expressing any desire to compete in mixed doubles at the Olympics in Paris. The pair performed really well when they played together in Tokyo three years ago, but it doesn’t appear like they will work together once more in Paris.

Since they are both extremely skilled clay players, many predicted that they would do well together. They had a decent chance because they played well together at the United Cup and frequently shared the court.

But when Sakkari mentioned that it appeared the fellow Greek had no interest in participating, Tsitsipas was questioned about it and gave an explanation for why he probably wouldn’t play mixed doubles.

“I know exactly what I want to do. I would like to play singles and doubles with my brother Petros if we are able to qualify for the Olympics. It’s physically exhausting for me to play three events in a single tournament, so I would want to avoid that.”

“I know that it’s the Olympics and it’s a great opportunity to play with Maria, and I completely agree she’s one of the best partners to have in the mixed doubles field.”

Tsitsipas’s only goal for the Olympics is to play with his brother. The strength of their relationship is evident in the fact that he listed their victory in the 2017 European Open as his favorite tennis accomplishment.

“I have enjoyed wonderful times with her. However, I also want to share a dream with my brother and become one of the very rare siblings to compete together in the Olympics, particularly in tennis.”
