Green Bay Packers Miss Out on Important Free Agent

The Green Bay Packers made headline deals worth over $100 million to begin free agency. The addition of safety Xavier McKinney and running back Josh Jacobs to the roster suggested that the Green Bay Packers front office was prepared to go after a Super Bowl victory with rookie quarterback Jordan Love. Though the roster is youthful and usually impressive, there are depth concerns that need to be addressed despite the team’s quick start to free agency.

Safety is still the greatest unknown on the Green Bay Packers depth chart. There are no other safety in Green Bay with more than two years of experience, and none of them have played a considerable amount of snaps in the NFL, even with the superstar addition of Xavier McKinney. The Green Bay Packers’ choices at the safety position are decreasing as the 2024 NFL Draft draws near and more free agents are being signed every day.

Defender Hybrid Isaiah Simmons Resigns, Removing Options for the Green Bay Packers Minimal

Isaiah Simmons, the Arizona Cardinals’ former eighth-round selection, is a player the Green Bay Packers probably had interest in signing this offseason. He re-signed with the New York Giants, thus sadly, the Green Bay Packers can no longer use his services.

Although Isaiah Simmons’ career has started somewhat uneventfully, he is an athletic linebacker who can cover a lot of ground in pass coverage, much like Quay Walker of the Green Bay Packers. Although many people probably view Isaiah Simmons as a bust, the 6’4″, 238 linebacker/defensive back hybrid is still an important defensive element. Isaiah Simmons could have found himself winning snaps for the Packers anywhere on the field with his versatility as an interior linebacker, edge, and safety. Additionally, Simmons has not missed a game in his five-year career. Given the Packers’ struggles in that area, Simmons’ health would be a valuable asset.

With Simmons no longer available, the Green Bay Packers will need to look elsewhere for a safety and linebacker. The Packers would probably need to add to the age of their available experienced safety in order to add talent to the secondary. The Green Bay Packers seem to be choosing to add to their safety room through the NFL Draft rather than drafting young Julian Blackmon, who is still available for selection.
