Seminoles legend makes one of the largest-ever athlete donations, fueling major upgrades to FSU football and community programs.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — June 29, 2025 — In a move that sent shockwaves through the college football landscape, former Florida State star and NFL veteran Warrick Dunn has announced a jaw-dropping $25 million donation to his alma mater, Florida State University. The gift, one of the largest ever given by a former collegiate athlete, is poised to transform FSU’s football program and strengthen the university’s community impact for decades to come.

The surprise announcement was made at a packed press event on campus, where Dunn appeared alongside FSU President Richard McCullough and head football coach Mike Norvell. Students, players, alumni, and media looked on as Dunn revealed his plan to fund both infrastructure and people: a dual focus on player development and outreach to underprivileged communities in Florida.

“This is about legacy,” Dunn said. “Not just mine, but the legacy of every young man who comes to Florida State dreaming of greatness. I want them to succeed on the field—and in life.”

The donation will support the construction of a new state-of-the-art Warrick Dunn Player Empowerment Complex, a facility that will include academic support services, life skills training, financial literacy programs, mental health resources, and a leadership academy for student-athletes.

In addition, a significant portion of the funds will be directed toward scholarships for underrepresented students and new community outreach programs through FSU Athletics, modeled after Dunn’s own charitable work through Warrick Dunn Charities.

President McCullough praised Dunn’s vision and generosity. “This gift is transformational. It not only enhances our athletic program—it reflects the values we want our students to embody: service, leadership, and resilience.”

Dunn’s donation immediately became the largest single contribution ever made by an FSU football alumnus. For perspective, the $25 million figure surpasses many entire athletic department budgets at smaller schools.

“Warrick is setting a new standard for what it means to give back,” said Coach Norvell. “This isn’t just a building. It’s a culture shift. This will impact generations of Seminoles.”

Reactions flooded in from across the sports world. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit called the donation “the most meaningful gift in recent college football memory.” NFL Hall of Famer Tony Dungy, who coached Dunn in Tampa Bay, tweeted: “Warrick Dunn continues to be one of the finest men I’ve ever met. His heart, vision, and humility are unmatched.”

Dunn, a 3-time 1,000-yard rusher for FSU and longtime NFL standout, has long been known for his philanthropy—especially his work providing homes for single parents. But this donation marks a new chapter in his legacy, one that intertwines deeply with the school that first gave him a national stage.

  1. As FSU eyes a return to national championship contention, Dunn’s investment may prove to be more than symbolic it could be the foundation of a new Seminole dynasty.
