Top WR in North Carolina and son of ECU legend Terrance Copper — recaps his spring practice visit to Greenville and shares reason why he wants to commit to Pirates
Kinston High School standout wide receiver Tyreek Copper, widely regarded as North Carolina’s top pass-catcher in the 2026 class, recently visited East Carolina University (ECU) for spring practice. The visit not only offered him a glimpse into the Pirates’ football program but also allowed him to reconnect with a family legacy deeply rooted in ECU’s history.
Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 180 pounds, Copper had an impressive junior season, recording 77 receptions for 1,391 yards and 16 touchdowns. His performance has attracted attention from several programs, including offers from NC Central, Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern, Princeton, Campbell, Cornell, and Elon .
During his visit to ECU, Copper was particularly impressed by the coaching staff. “Coach Harrell and Coach Roberts are genuine people, and they really know what they’re doing,” he noted. The Pirates’ high-tempo spread offense also resonated with Copper, who has experience in similar systems since his freshman year. “I can definitely see myself fitting in, whether it’s in the slot or on the outside,” he added .
The Copper family’s connection to ECU is profound. Tyreek’s father, Terrance Copper, was a standout receiver for the Pirates from 2000 to 2003, amassing 139 receptions for 1,683 yards before embarking on a nine-year NFL career . His older brother, Terrance Copper Jr., also played at ECU, further solidifying the family’s ties to the program .
Reflecting on his family’s influence, Copper shared, “My family doesn’t tell me what I want to hear — they tell me what I need to hear.” This ethos has driven him to continually refine his skills, often staying on the field after games to work on routes and techniques with his father .([Neuse News Sports][3])
As Copper continues to evaluate his collegiate options, ECU remains a strong contender, offering both a competitive football environment and a chance to continue his family’s legacy. His decision will undoubtedly be influenced by the blend of personal history and professional opportunity that ECU presents.
