Breaking: Padres’ Vásquez Reveals Pre-Game Setback That Led to Tigers Meltdown

San Diego Padres right-hander Randy Vásquez faced a challenging outing on Monday night, as the Padres fell 6–4 to the Detroit Tigers. Vásquez, who was acquired in the Juan Soto trade with the New York Yankees last offseason, allowed six runs over just two-plus innings, marking a significant departure from his earlier season form.

The game began with promise for the Padres, as Fernando Tatis Jr. singled, Manny Machado walked, and Xander Bogaerts loaded the bases with another single. Tirso Ornelas then grounded into a fielder’s choice, bringing in the first run.

However, the Tigers responded swiftly. Gleyber Torres led off with a single, followed by Zach McKinstry’s RBI triple. Colt Keith’s single then gave Detroit a 2–1 lead. In the second inning, the Tigers extended their lead with runs from Tomas Nido and Riley Greene. Vásquez’s struggles continued into the third, where he loaded the bases and allowed a two-RBI single to Torres, concluding his outing after 57 pitches.

Despite a solo home run from Gavin Sheets and an RBI single by Oscar Gonzalez in the fifth inning, the Padres couldn’t overcome the early deficit. Detroit’s bullpen, particularly Brenan Hanifee and Will Vest, held San Diego scoreless in the later innings, with Vest striking out Tatis Jr. to end the game

This loss brings the Padres’ record to 16–7, still leading the National League West. They will look to bounce back in the second game of the series on Tuesday, with Nick Pivetta set to start.

Vásquez’s performance raised concerns, especially considering his earlier success this season. In his previous starts, he had demonstrated control and effectiveness, including a quality start against the Cubs where he struck out two batters over five innings.  However, the outing against the Tigers highlighted areas needing improvement.

The Padres’ coaching staff will likely work closely with Vásquez to address the issues from this game. Given his potential and previous performances, there’s confidence that he can bounce back and contribute significantly to the team’s success this season.

As the Padres continue their series against the Tigers, all eyes will be on how the team adjusts and how Vásquez prepares for his next opportunity on the mound.
