Although Stefanos Tsitsipas registered to compete in the 2024 Barcelona Open, his father Apostolos hinted that he might not show up.
The Greek player participated in his first-ever event at the Monte-Carlo Masters, which kicked off the clay season recently. He’s always had a terrific time at this tournament, and on Sunday, after defeating Casper Ruud in the championship match, he was able to raise the trophy in celebration.
The Barcelona Open, a prestigious ATP 500 tournament with often excellent draws, was scheduled to be his next event. Based on his two final outcomes, it appears that he enjoys playing there and returns every year.
Given that his father hinted that he might not play, this year might be a little different. Given that Apostolos Tsitsipas is both his coach and father, he has some say in the choice, and a demanding week in Monte Carlo makes missing the event a sensible option.
If what his father said at the press conference following his son’s victory in Monte Carlo is any indication, he may compete at the event rather than the Madrid Open.
In the past, Tsitsipas didn’t enjoy the event because of the rapid conditions, which isn’t his cup of tea. They will eventually do an internal assessment before determining whether to play.
