According to reports, Liverpool is monitoring Alan Varela, a midfielder for Porto, ahead of this summer, when they may potentially employ Ruben Amorim, the manager of Sporting Lisbon.

Fabrizio Romano and others have strongly linked Amorim to the Liverpool position, but it appears the Reds may also make more raids on the Portuguese league, since they appear to be monitoring Varela at Porto.

Liverpool watched Varela at Porto’s most recent game, according to the print edition of Record, which Sport Witness translated and cited. However, it wasn’t exactly a vintage performance from the gifted 22-year-old.

Varela is still well-liked despite his impressive performance at Porto, so it’s not unexpected that he appears to be getting interest from major teams like Liverpool in the summer.

Varela transfer: Following their summertime spending binge, will Liverpool continue to buy midfield players?

Liverpool to get Alan Varela?

Varela is like a terrific talent who would fit in well at LFC, but it’s unclear if they’ll feel the need to add players to that area of the field after adding four last summer.

Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch joined Jurgen Klopp’s team after Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were sold, while James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita left on free transfers.

Though there may be opportunity for one more addition, such as Varela, given that Thiago Alcantara is soon to become a free agent, the Merseyside giants also have players like Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones improving in that section of their roster.

It’s likely that many other teams will enter the contest in the coming months if Liverpool decides not to make Varela a top priority.
