Russell was a key member of the teams that won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1974 and 1975. He was inducted into the Steelers Hall of Honor in 2017.

Russell was a member of the Steelers for 168 games in a row throughout his NFL career. Russell, a Missouri native and No. 16 draft choice, participated in seven Pro Bowls and won the 1971 team MVP award.

Russell joined the Steelers in 1963 and left the team for two years to serve in the military. Before retirement, he played for the team for ten more years, having made a comeback in 1966.
